Inspiration is a funny thing, especially as a photographer trying to empower girls to smash a glass ceiling. I’ve been re-reading one of my favorites books, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (you can find it here), which talks a lot of about the creative process and inspiration. You never know when it’s going to hit you, and sometimes, when it does, it just isn’t the right time. That was exactly the story with this image.
I originally photographed beautiful Avah for this image back in early November, as we were awaiting election results. I then shelved the project because of all the turmoil and craziness that surrounded the election and the end of the year. Then, on Inauguration Day, the project returned to me with a vengeance. The inspiration hit me full force. Watching our first female Vice-President being sworn into office stoked all my emotions, and I sat down to create and composite this image.
Why was this so important for me to create? There are so many reasons, but as an advocate of children and childhood, for me it was simple. Little girls all over the world watched as the first Madam Vice President of the United States took office. It has been a long-time coming, but it is finally here. Whether Vice-President Kamala Harris is perfect or not is irrelevant. None of us are. We all have our faults. As adults, sometimes we forget what it is like to look for role models (mine has always been Maya Angelou, but that’s a story for another time). It’s even more important to see and have a role model that represents you and the way you look.
May girls throughout the world now know that your dreams can come true. You can shatter that glass ceiling. So, dream big little ones. Your day is not that far off, and we are all here to help you along your way.
The response to this photo has been absolutely beautiful and overwhelming. The power of seeing a little girl (or your own daughter) smash that glass ceiling, and waking up to that image on her bedroom wall every day, can be life changing. What a beautiful way to inspire her and create confidence. At the request of so many, I am offering these single image sessions to anyone who believes in the power of their girl. If you would like to book one (they are extremely limited), please follow this link. They are only available through February 5, 2021.
Also, if you would like to purchase a print of this image, you can do so here.
